How to play poker (Texas Hold'em)

Doyle Brunson's Super System: A Course in Power Poker, 3rd EditionWell, since there are no suggestions this week (not until Friday), I though I might share some poker tips with you. First of all, poker is not just a game of probabilities. Although luck may play an important part in this game, in the long run, a good player will make profit. And that's a fact.

One could write a whole
book about how to play poker (actually many books have been written on this subject, with Doyle Brunson's Super System: A Course in Power Poker, 3rd Edition being the most popular), but I'm only going to focus on a few tips that will improve your play.

State of mind
Having a clear mind in poker is vital, since the worst enemy of a (good) player is his own self. A usual situation in poker and gambling generally is called "tilt". When a player is losing money, it is a common case that he will want to gamble more and more in order to gain the money that he lost. That makes him vulnerable, since he can gamble with anything at hand and if the other players notice that (they WILL), then he can lose quite a lot of money. If you cannot avoid being on tilt, then you can certainly avoid playing while on tilt. It's as easy as that; when on tilt stay out for a couple of rounds, relax and return to the game when your mind is ready again to think reasonably.

Variety
You should always have and follow a strategy while playing. Some players prefer a tight, while other prefer aloose play. Tight players only participate ehwn they have something really strong at hand, while loose players participate with almost anything. So after a few rounds, the opponents can have a picture of your type of play. That makes you predictable, a situation which you must avoid by any means. In order to avoid that, just play in a variety of ways. For example when you have the same good hand, don't make the same raise all the time.

Position
Your position in the table is more important than you think. If you know your opponents, or if you have the chance to watch the for a while (DO it), then you should try to sit right of a tight player and left of a loose one. This way, you will be able to control your bets. You will be able to fold when the loose player raises and you have a bad hand and also raise when the loose player doesn't. You will know if the tight player (that speaks after you) has a good hand, if he makes the call or re-raises. Also, when you "speak" late in the game (for example if you have the Dealer button in front of you), then you can participate with more hands. When you are one of the firsts to speak, then you can't possible know your opponent's hands. That's why you can't call or raise with many hands. But if you speak last, having seen your opponents bets, then you will make a decision more easily. (If they raise and re-raise and you have a medium hand, then you know you should fold.)

Simple tips that can improve your game. Even if you are familiar to these tips, it's not always easy to follow them. So I think the most difficult thing in poker is to stay focused and keep your mind clear.

Good luck!
